ANDE ANDE

ANDE Side A: 145.825 Digipeater up/downlink 1200 baud packet
ANDE Side B: 145.825 downlink (backup to side A only)

ANDE Science Missions:
The NRL science mission of ANDE is to measure the density of the upper atmosphere by precise tracking of the orbit decay by the Maui Laser Ranging Tracking Station. The Comm system provides important telemetry on the attitude and temperature of the spacecraft.
ANDE Operations:
When ANDE is awake, it has four operating capabilities, telemetry, digipeating, a Packet-to-Voice Synthesizer and Lasers. It sleeps 90% of the time and only wakes up for 2 seconds out of every 16 seconds to see if it hears any packets. If none, then it goes back to sleep to save power. (it has no solar power system, only primary batteries). Once it awakens, it is useable as a digipeater until 1 minute after the last packet heard. The batteries should last a year.

Set-up as ANDE Command Station (Nov 2006 - Dec 2007):

ANDE still good during this pass.

DK3WN did set the telemetry rate on ANDE-1 to 10 seconds.
PA3GUO did in parallel the same on ANDE-2.
Both commands were accepted & executed correctly.

ANDE-1 has still stable temperature.
ANDE-2 has still stable temperature (even going down a bit still)

Lots of traffic, and even new stations showing up !

ANDE is now exactly one year in space, and will de-orbit within the next days.
It's getting time to say goodbye to a good friend:
mp3:  "Bye bye ANDE"     "Bye Bye my Friend"

Telemetry reception using the 2x6 elements antenna (no pre-amplifier) is still fine.

December 15, 2007:

ANDE is still doing fine, and many stations grab the opportunity to make a quick APRS QSO during the last days in space of our friend:

Maybe a false alarm, but for the first time ever ANDE-2 did not execute a command properly.
After I set the telemetry rate to 10 seconds, it did in reality take a period of 16 seconds:

From 220km to de-orbit the graph shows ~12 days, so de-orbit today + ~12 days = ~24 Dec

December 05, 2007:
A very bad way of looking at this most likely, but anyway:

RAFT crashed within a day when it was at 175 km height.
Looking at the diagram, delta between 230 & 175 km is ~20 days.
Today ANDE is at 230 km, so do we have until Dec 5 + 20 = Dec 25 ?
Anyway: I inserted the current (NOVA based) height for Dec 5 in the diagram:

VOICE Mode:
Enabled VOICE mode during the 22:00UTC pass, but ANDE signals were not that good.
As I have had this in the past, some passess are better as the others, I did not worry too much.
I only picked up in voice "GUO", but I am not sure whether that was someone calling me or my own packet (which I doubt). Following stations tried voice: DL8DR and EA4EKH. Kind of a pitty for them the results were not that good.
(TE 1 was also set during this pass)

Signal strength test:

During the 20:22UTC pass myself and Rob, PE1ITR, measured the differences in signal strengths using my new 2x6 elements DK7ZB and the electronic polarization switch made by Rob. Using either vertical or horizontal signals were fading between S3..S5, with circular polarixation they were stable at S5 (no QSB and much more comfortable to listen to).

November 19, 2007:
Mike, DK3WN, has created and released the ANDE de-Orbit AWARD website.

November 17, 2007:
ANDE is expected to de-orbit within 4 weeks from today.
Therefore, with approval of Bob, Mike and myself teamed up to initiate a special award.

Details on the Award I announced today on the amsat-bb.

ANDE (NO-61) will de-orbit somewhere in the next 4 weeks.
We do not know exactly, but that's the challenge and the fun !

For these last weeks a special event is launched, and everyone
is invited to participate !

A special ANDE de-Orbit AWARD can be obtained by everyone that makes
QSOs via ANDE or receives telemetry during its final 10 days in space.
On the AWARD your callsign and achievements will be mentioned:

ANDE APRS QSOs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1 point for each 2 way APRS QSO over ANDE in its last 10 days of life.
Example:
00:01:31:24 : KB1GVR]APU25N,ANDE-1*,qAO,K8YSE-6::KC2PCR :GA Doug
00:01:31:42 : KC2PCR]APRS,ANDE-1*,qAO,KB2CEV::KB1GVR :G'Afternoon Mark ;)

ANDE Telemetry Reception:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
10 points for telemetry packets on the last day
9 points for telemetry packets on the last day -1
 ...
1 point for telemetry packets on the last day -9

In total 55 Telemetry points can be achieved, all to be scored in the last 10 days.

Bob, WB4APR, will set the official date/time of de-orbit. The 10 days before
that date then count for the calculation of your achievements....
... but you do not know before that when those days will be :-)

To obtain the award participates should, within 2 weeks after ANDE de-orbits,
email his/her own score + proof (the packets).

Further details like (shipping) costs and the submission email address will
be announced in the coming days.

Have fun - and keep ANDE busy in its final exciting days in space !

Bob, WB4APR
Mike, DK3WN
Henk, PA3GUO

October 13, 2007:
After an announcement on the amsat-bb I enabled the Packet to VOICE transponder (side A) for a Saturday afternoon pass over Europe.
Mike, DK3WN, was very successful (click on the text below to listen to the recording):

Activation of VOICE MODE: "Welcome to TextSpeech"
DK3WN says "Hello this is DK3WN speaking"
DK3WN says "Hello Henk it works"
DK3WN says "Hi Henk nice to meet you on ANDE"
DK3WN says "Hello G0ISW this is DK3WN"
DK3WN says "Hello Henk it works fine"
DK3WN says "Hello SP5MG DD6UBW PA3GUO"

October 12, 2007:
Tested the Packet to VOICE transponder (side A):

VOICE Mode is by default of and needs to be enabled by a command station.
After a few minutes it automatically turn off again.
Operating details are described here.

Audio recording, notice that voice is weaker as APRS packets: Welcome to textspeech

-> APRS digipeating via ANDE side A worked
-> Logging on to ANDE side A worked (=connect + password exchange)
-> TE 1 worked, distance between the ANDE side A beacons was 10 seconds
-> Maximum elevation was 18 degrees, link (signal strengths) was good, radio in the satellite works fine.

Next, during the 76 degrees elevation pass I tested ANDE side B.
- Logged on to ANDE side B - Issued the command TE 1 (telemetry rate 10 seconds).

August 21, 2007:
Using the APRS protocol emails can be send quite easily via a satellite.

With these TNC commands an APRS message to "EMAIL" is send, which is in the packet network further distributed:
MYCALL PA3GUO-5
U APRS VIA ARISS
HBAUD 1200
Next enter in the TNC in CONVERSE mode:
:EMAIL :pa3guo@amsat.org test3
and the message gets relayed via the satellite to the APRS network, which decomposes the message further and forwards it via the internet to the given address.
